Despite hundreds of threats of death and violence directed at women and at the venue staff, the RadFem Riseup conference IS GOING FORWARD. We are having a great time with some wonderful women, gearing up for a day of presentations and strategy tomorrow. For every threat of violence we receive, another woman wakes up to the reality of the situation. Every death threat strengthens our resolve. We will not be prevented from meeting. We will not be prevented from organizing. We will not be prevented from rising up.
Minus the pornified woman on the right, this one is kinda cute. Thanks psychopathic tumblr stalkers ❤
“June 25, 2013
On June 22, 2013 Vancouver Rape Relief & Women’s Shelter hosted an all day event with local feminist allies to discuss, evaluate and strategize different tactics of women’s resistance to male violence against women.
Dozens of women participated in the day including members of the Indigenous Women Against the Sex Industry (IWASI), the Committee for Domestic Workers and Caregivers Rights, the Asian Women’s Coalition Ending Prostitution (AWCEP), EVE (formerly Exploited Voices now Educating) and past and current collective members of Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter.
During the day we passed a resolution to publicly express our solidarity with Deep Green Resistance in light of the recent attack on their members at the Law and Disorder Conference and afterward:
We condemn the attack on the members of Deep Green Resistance at Law and Disorder Conference in Portland Oregon. We are appalled by the conference organizers utter refusal to protect DGR members from threats, bullying and silencing and troubled that no other participant interfered or insisted that the conference will practice its premise for “safe space”.
We stand in solidarity with Deep Green Resistance and its commitment to feminist principles including the right of women (as all oppressed groups) to define their boundaries and decide who is allowed in their space.
Hilla Kerner, for the Collective of Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter”
Thank you so much to all the women who were present and involved in this. These are the women we strive to have as allies.
Men have been silencing women for ten thousand years and it’s happening still.
At the “Law and Disorder Conference” in Portland, OR, on May 11-12, two women were peacefully tabling, handing out literature, and selling books from our organization, Deep Green Resistance. A group of five queer activists came up to them and one of the men began shouting at the women, using aggressive language and threatening gestures. He grabbed and defaced table materials. When one of the women went to protect the materials, he marked her arm and hand as well.
Why is the “Resistance Rewritten” workshop not happening at Launchpad?
Launchpad cancelled our event twenty four hours before it was scheduled. The two speakers that were scheduled to give the presentation are radical feminists, and Launchpad fears that giving radical feminists a voice would, in their words, “alter the community’s perception of our establishment.” In an email to the organizers of this event, they said that they “wish to avoid the controversy.” The scheduled presentation has nothing to do with radical feminism at all – it’s about historical examples of social justice and environmentalism – but Launchpad believes that censoring radical feminists from speaking on any topic will preserve their public image among those who disagree with feminism.
Why does Launchpad want to censor radical feminists?
Radical feminists believe that a social system of male domination starts with human beings who are biologically male or female and creates two social classes of people: men and women. Socialization to either group can be a brutal process. Our opposition believes that we should reform the caste system called gender by making it more flexible and palatable. Radical feminists believe that gender is an oppressive caste system that needs to be dismantled so that all of us can be free.
For speaking out about this belief, radical feminists have increasingly been met with rape threats, physical intimidation and assault, and blacklisting. By canceling our event, Launchpad has given in to forces that believe feminists deserve to be threatened with rape for speaking out about the systemic oppression of women.
Why should you care?
Launchpad and countless other venues and institutions who participate in this blacklisting are creating a culture that silences women, makes our experiences unspeakable, and uses fear tactics to keep us silent and obedient. This is wrong, and it is cowardly. We need to demand more from our community spaces and from our community at large. If we allow bullies to silence women, who will those bullies go after next?
What can you do?
-Contact Launchpad and tell them that this behavior is unacceptable: 646-494-7211 and
-Pay attention: This kind of censorship is happening all the time, all over the country. Call it when you see it and let the perpetrators know that women will not be silenced.
-Educate yourself: Here are are a couple places to start-
The Resistance Rewritten tour has been under attack since its inception simply due to the fact that we are radical feminists. Despite the entire idea of the program and the content of the presentation not having anything to do with gender or feminism, there was a surge by postmodernists, manarchists, and MRA’s to shut us down. This is a very clear example of silencing women, and sadly it is not an isolated example.
We have been physically attacked and intimidated before because of our radical feminist views. We have been threatened with rape, death, and being beaten. We did nothing to provoke others except for critique gender as a caste system, and suggest that it be dismantled.
When the venues originally booked became aware of these threats, many sided with those doing the threatening. Some venues caved in to the pressure of abusers, and other events were rescheduled at other venues. Some of the venues that canceled sent us emails saying that our talk would be “divisive” and that our views “weren’t welcome” in certain spaces, that they had to maintain a “safe space” for the “most targeted, marginalized and brutalized members of society.” This apparently does not include women. Some spaces have feared that hosting radical feminists would “alter the community’s perception” of them, and told us that they wished to “avoid the controversy, showing that this stance is cowardly as well as illogical. We have seen this over and over with the kneejerk blacklisting that is occuring to radical feminists across the US and Europe. Our questions: who is contributing to the unsafe space? Who are the people promoting hate? And whose speech is dangerous, who is threatening to rape, beat and burn women?
Nobody will be free until the hierarchy of gender is dismantled.
Bend it til it breaks.
